best swimwear experience? why, Popina, of course! back when it was Poppi Swim i bought this vintage halter 1-piece suit and couldn’t believe how perfectly it fit. who knew a mail order suit would beat out the zillions i’d tried on in stores? Pam is a swimwear genius–she really understands fit. only just now realized i’ve been wearing it for 4 years. yikes, time for a new one! :)

My best bathing suit story is when I found the PERFECT bathing suit a few years ago. It was a vintage style black with white polka dots one piece (I am typically not a fan of one-pieces, hadn’t owned one since elementary school, but I love vintage and this one just happened to look amazing on me. Looked totally Bettie Page.)
I had been looking for a new bathing suit for about a year or two. This was when I was high school, so I had outgrown my old bikini top, and had trouble finding a new one that fit. There were few stores where I lived at the time that sold swimwear so I was in a bit of a pickle. So for about two summers, every time I would go swimming with friends, I would be stuck wearing a pair of shorts and a tank top. So I looked kind of out of place, especially when it came time to get in the water and friends ask if I intended to go swimming in what I was wearing and I would have to explain that I was. Awkward.
But anyway, I ended up visiting my sister and since she lived in a city at the time, I ended up looking in a ton of stores for bathing suits. I wound up in this store in Boston that sold vintage/kitsch stuff, including clothing. And just my luck, since it was summer, they had retro 1950′s/60′s style bathing suits! I tried one on, the black and white polka dotted one-piece- it looked amazing! I bought it and was so happy with it. Until a few weeks later, I went back home. I had gone swimming with friends one day, and when I came home to change I left my bathing suit in the bathroom- I had intended to do my laundry later that night. I went back out with my friends, came home the next day and couldn’t find my adorable one-piece. I asked my mother if she had seen it. She said she had done my laundry and it was in the drier!!! Immediate panic. I ran upstairs, checked the drier, and there it was. I had shrunk in the drier and was no where NEAR wearable. Ugh. It was awful. lol
Since then I have found a bikini that fits, not as good as that one, but it is wearable enough. I would love to win this giveaway so I can get the Retro Sadie – Red White Polka Dot one-piece. It looks almost exactly like my old one, except it’s red instead of black.
Thanks for the giveaway opportunity! ;)

I am not sure if this would be my best or most embarassing swimsuit experience but here goes……
A few years ago I found a (unworn) vintage swimsuit from the late 40′s or early 50′s. It was the cutest thing I have ever seen. Teal with black trim, yellow zebras printed all over and ruffles on the bottom. The straps even had buttons so you could take them off or wear them however you wanted. It was absolutely adorable.
The problem…… I found this swimsuit in October and I was dieing to wear it. After joking around with a couple of friends, I somehow ended up wearing the swimsuit to a bar. It wasn’t even Halloween yet. Even though my face was redder than it’s ever been, I received plenty of compliments. That whole experience was so out of character for me (i don’t even go to bars) but a girl’s gotta have fun right?

I don’t really have a best bathing suit story for my adulthood. I have suits that are referred to as whale costumes. Misshapen, ugly colored and not flattering in the least.
Recently I did find some beautiful and well taken care of vintage suits that I “hope” to fit in someday. For now they decorate my walls.
I’m definitely going to check out Popina Swimwear!
