Tag I'm It - 5 things you didn't know about me

Betty of She's a Betty has tagged me to share 5 things you didn't know about me. I feel kind of silly, but here it goes...

1. I am an Junior High English Teacher by day. I love writing, language, the web and business, so DebutanteClothing was a natural next step for me.

2. I once saw Michael Jackson at Disneyland in the early 80s when Captain EO came out. He was wearing a wig and a mustache and I just kept staring at him because I knew it was him and didn't know what I should do. Then his burly body guard told me to keep moving.

3. My first language was Spanish and I didn't learn how to speak English until I was in 2nd grade.

4. I'm married to a funny, adorable, intelligent geek. He encourages my blogging, fashion, vintage craziness.

5. I once ran into one of my students at a rockabilly show. I was smoking a cigarette, wearing a white wife beater and a black bra and I was probably drinking too. I don't work at that school anymore.

I tag the adnostic, ms. jen, ask fashion kitty, vintage grace and stella kae

Seychelles - Subconscious Favorite

I was doing some regular cleaning out of my overflowing closet, and I realized I have a lot of pairs of Seychelles shoes. I don't purposely go looking for this brand, I just happen to have started a collection.

I guess there are some designers you just gravitate to, subconsciously. But it's not like all these shoes have any one style in common. And my other Seychelles range from black and white tweed flats-very Chanel-esque and black strappy kitten heel sandals.

Recently, I purchased a much needed pair of boots. I avoid buying boots because my legs are so short I can't seem to find a pair I like. But I found these granny style mid calf boots at Nordstrom Rack for $89 and loved them. They are so comfortable and I love the mix of styles-a traditional boot with the victorian lace up detail. Totally rockin'. And I also picked up a super comfy pair of Seychelles black leather kitten heels with a mary jane strap.

I guess now I know and will remember that I do love Seychelles and I have the collection to prove it.

Ugly Betty Won!

It's a commercial break for the Golden Globes, and my fave show Ugly Betty won! Yipee.

Update: So did America Ferrara. I was so excited I accidentally kicked my husband. Ooops.

I think it really is an amazing cast. I laugh out loud every episode. Congrats America!

Cameron Silver's Obsession with Hermes

Check out the Style.com video by the Sartorialist (my fashion blog obsession) which gives a peek into Cameron Silver's (of vintage couture store) perfect mid century crib, surrounded by the daddy of all luxe, Hermes. Hermes everything, including his pooch's pillow and leash. Lucky dog.

Factory Girl goes Vintage Shopping

Sienna Miller is in LA making a variety of appearances.

But her first stop on Friday was LaBrea Avenue vintage store The Way We Wore. The store’s quickly becoming as important to the Hollywood community as Decades or Resurrection or PaperBag Princess, as its owner, vintage clothing connoisseur Doris Raymond, has helped costume various films, including the recent Fur with Nicole Kidman and Robert Downey Jr. Miller, with Raymond's expertise, picked up dresses from Holly Harp and Ossie Clark, not to mention a Versace from the eighties, a fringy flapper dress, and a Bugmal gown. The store’s packed with big gems—including vintage Oscar de la Renta and Geoffrey Beene—as well as smaller treats in the form of great handbags and shoes. Kimberley Brooks, wife of Albert and one of L.A.'s most stylish women, is also a regular.

Dita Calls it Quits

via Metroblogging Los Angeles

After a very brief marriage, and very dramatic wedding (featured in Vogue no less), Dita Von Teese has filed for divorce from goth hubby Marilyn Manson. But really. Can you stay married to someone who wears more make up than you?

ditamarilyn.jpg

They say the best way to get over a break up is to stay busy. Well, Dita's social calendar has been so full of fashion shows, boutique openings and other wonderful events, she'll be asking "Marilyn who?"

High Waisted Pants

Two thoughts: I, too, am so over skinny pants and so over belly showing.

I thought I'd jump in with the vintage perspective on all the high waist talk going on in fashion blog land. Susie Bubbletalked about the new Diesel campaign.

Ms. Jen, of Black Phoebe and Barflies fame, and I were discussing the demise of the conservative belly girl- the low rise. Thank god, high waisted pants are beginning to make a fashionable comeback, because as every vintage loving girl knows, it's damned near impossible to find good pants with a high rise. Even normal rise would be considered high by today's standards.

I have been hunting for a good pair of high waisted, wide leg pants for a few month now. The one caveat-they have to be affordable.

When I say high waisted, I mean above the natural waist, just below the rib cage. This style was very popular in the 40s and again in the 70s when the 40s made a comeback. It's nearly impossible to find vintage trousers because, well, pants weren't as popular as dresses, so they are rarer. So in this case, retro reproductions are your friend.

I prefer the 40s wide leg to the 70s flare because such a dramatic waistline really needs to be balanced with some width on the leg.

avapants.jpg

So far, Stop Staring's Wide Leg Pants found at MyBabyJo.com are nice. The fabric is a little thin and unlined, but they drape well and are relatively inexpensive. They button and zip in the back.

Vintage Resolution

Fashion Week Daily featured the fashion resolutions of many celebrities. Here's my fave:

via Fashion Week Daily

Shiva Rose McDermott: “Well, for years, I wore so many designer clothes, and then I wound up wearing the dresses that get passed around through the designers. Then I started buying vintage and no one else was wearing it and it cost a lot less—so I’m sticking to vintage for a while. And it’s more fun to shop for.”

Yay! Another enlightened fashionista.
