Worth Collection at Bullocks Wilshire Tea Room
Last Saturday, I was lucky enough to attend the runway show of the Worth Collection at the historical Bullocks Wilshire Tea Room in Los Angeles.
The Tea Room is perched on the 5th floor of the art deco Bullocks Wilshire, now home to Southwestern Law School.

The Worth Collection was shown alongside fashions from the 40s to the 70s to show the bridge between then and now as a way bring the collection to a younger audience. I just loved the idea of mixing the new with the old in honor of one of the most beloved shopping destinations in Los Angeles history.

Well heeled ladies in tea appropriate suits mingled with young, fresh faced attendees. The theme was carried throughout the event beautifully.

Leather jackets, pencil skirts and smart business casual suits for well healed ladies shared the runway through the tea room with vintage ensembles such as a 1950s brocade dress and jacket trimmed in mink, a 1940s champaign, bias cut negligee and robe, and a 1950s wedding gown.

The Worth Collection is a line of ready to wear clothing for the busy woman who wants to dress well, wear quality clothing, but doesn't have the time to shop for herself or would like to entrust someone with sophisticated taste to pick some things out for her. A Worth representative will invite customers to view the exclusive collections in their home, much like you would shop in a designer's salon in a major, high end department store, such as Bullocks.
From a business standpoint, the the business model is a smart idea. Women get unique merchandise that isn't sold in mass at a department store, they can purchase quality items with reasonable price tags because the the overhead is low, and the quality seemed to be luxurious-leathers, fine wools and modern silhouettes made the line attractive.

Mix It Up - Vintage & New - Neo Mod Look
I am always flattered when people, including people in the fashion industry, ask me where I got something I am wearing. Some even go as far as asking me if I'm a stylist.
In reality, all I'm doing is mixing my beloved vintage with modern pieces. Stylists and costume designers have been doing this for ever. Patricia Field is the queen of the old/new mix.
So I'd like to start a new installment called Mix It Up. Let me know what you think of my Neo Mod look.
Mix a Marc Jacobs jersey dress with a beautiful back neckline treatment and a bold vintage mod necklace and you'll take a basic to intriguing. You always want to add a bit of surprise to your outfit and vintage is a perfect way to do this.
See more of my Mix It Up - Vintage & New list at ThisNext.

Great Fashion Books at Barnes and Noble
Mr. Debutante and I went on a Sunday night date of coffee and book/magazine browsing at Barnes and Noble-my favorite past time.
I love books. I love fashion books even more. I have way too many fashion history and design encyclopedias than I care to mention. I guess I just have an insatiable thirst for fashion academics. An no, that is not an oxymoron.
So, I was so excited to see the Kyoto Costume museum book on sale for $19.95. This is a quite a deal since it is $39.95 on Amazon. The Kyoto Costume books are a must have for any fashion lover as it offers some of the most beautiful images of costume of the 19th and 20th centuries.

I also spotted American Fashion by Charlie Scheips, the director of the Conde Nast archive. The mammoth book is currently 20% off making it $40. You can get it cheaper on Amazon, but if you just can't wait, pick it up at B&N.

I Want to Rock n Roll n Dress Up All Night
Unless you've been living under a rock, or suburbia, CBGB closed it's doors last month. But in 2008, the CBGB location will reopen as the newest boutique of mens wear designer and rock and roller, John Varvatos.

John Varvatos has always been a fan of rock music. And rockers are huge fans of John Varvatos' beautiful mix of rock star silhouettes such as slim trousers, leather hats and biker boots. A clever blend of hard and debonair without a hint of metrosexuality. My total testosterone-laden counterpart. If Alice Cooper wears his stuff, it's not metro guys!

John Varvatos was recently featured in Pasadena Magazine, a magazine I write for. Varvatos was exhibiting the work of legendary rock photographer Jim Marshall.

I love that John Varvatos infuses his love of music into his finely tailored garments for men who may or may not have been punks, but have the soul of a rock star.

Mayor of Fashion
Apparel News reported the Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa attended the Los Angeles Fashion Market this week along with his daughter and her friend.
Mayor Villaraigosa has been showing up at quite a few fashion events including the Eduardo Lucero Box Eight fashion show at Vibianas. I stared like a star struck teenager. I guess his body guard took pity on me and offered to take a picture. I rarely get star struck, but the man is charismatic. Lots of LA model types flocked to get a picture with him.
I won't comment on his personal home life because frankly, that's his business. But I am glad he is brining some attention to Downtown LA and Los Angeles fashion. The LA fashion scene needs to be recognized as a viable business contender and maybe the Mayor's presence will garner some media attention to the fashion business in LA because the celebrity angle can only go so far.
