Bondage Meets Flapper

I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Diable and Diablesse, two amazing bloggers from Mexico City and future Manolo bloggers, about amazing designers in Mexico.

One of the designers that really catches my eye is Trista. Trista's designs are moody, slightly gothic, but incredibly beautiful and chic. This dress particularly caught my eye because I love mixing looks and styles. I mix punk and vintage 50s all the time.

Trista gets it. A bondage style bust...

And where exactly am I seeing flapper influence? Check it...

It takes time and effort to create the right eclectic mix of vintage and new. Trista does it beautifully for me.

Vintage Find - Vintage Metallic & Leopard Stilletos

There is a fine line between tacky and glamorous. I just can't decide if these have crossed it, all be it, with a switch and a smile.

What do you think?

Fashion Blogger Awards

Since certain unnamed blogger awards fail to consider fashion blogs worthy of recognition (the fact that Conde Nast decision makers read fashion blogs means nothing to you?), a few noteworthy fashion bloggers have taken matters into their own hands and created the first ever fashion blog awards-the Fabbie.

And there are some big names involved: the Manolo, Fashiontribes, Glam and the it list goes on.

I am so honored and thrilled to be nominated for

Best Indie/Niche Blog

Zandra Rhodes Art Film - Eat Your Chiffon

zandra rhodes

The 1960s brought on an explosion of creative genius in the British arts scene. And the biggest bomb of color and innovation was a young fashion designer named Zandra Rhodes.

Zandra wasn't just inspired by her surroundings, she lived them-green hair, theatrical makeup and bold patterns were her extroverted fatigues. While her color palette is bold and punchy, her designs are fluid and feminine using fabrics such as chiffon, organza and crinoline. She designs for women like me who like "Pretty Punk Rock".

While her hair color has changed to a punctuating fuschia, she remains a walking canvas reflecting her love for nature, art and design.

Apparently, Zandra's friends are as colorful and surreal as her designs. "Chapter7: Eat Your Chiffon" is a surreal dinner party art film starring fashion icons such as Natt Weller, Marios Schwab and IQONS founder, Rafael Jimenez amongst others and some other strange characters in Zandra Rhodes penthouse. The film was shot by an amazing new photographer/filmmaker Ben Charles Edwards (www.bencharlesedwards.com) who was inspired by Chapter 7 of Alice in Wonderland and John Waters' Eat Your Make-Up.

Part 1 was released last week and part 2 was released today. You can expect Part 3 on the 21st. Please take a look here for a preview www.glassloves.com or www.youtube.com/glassloves.

Enjoy!

Debutante Reader, Catherine, asks:

Can you tell me a good resource for photos of and especially instructions on constructing glamorous 50s hairstyles a la Hayworth and Crawford? I'm thinking of those fabulous center parted rolls with the low maiden row in the back. Can't seem to find any good resources on the net but I found your site looking for dresses and I thought you might be able to help. thanks, catherine

Sugar and Spikes - Comme des Garçons top

I love little 40s and 50s chiffon and sheer nylon tops.

They're like little puffs of cotton candy. But I often feel too sweet in them so I toughen them up with a contrasting fitted cami underneath and jeans.

This Comme des Garçons top is so sweetly punk rock, it's sick. It looks like a Sunday school girl got into a knife fight and won. Love it.

Capessa - online magazine, blog and vlog for women

I just discovered a really neat new site for women. Part of what makes blogs and video blogs so addicting is that not only are you feeding your mind with knowledge, you are also getting a personal sense of the deliverer of that knowledge.

Capessa offers a whole slew of content in various formats: forums, blog pots and videos. The content is interesting but best of all, it's written and told by real women.

I thought you would like this video about an innovative designer who recreates party and wedding dresses using pieces of old and vintage dresses, jewelry and accessories, including hats. I just hope she didn't chop up good, wearable vintage. Shudder.

Retro? Costume? Vintage? Draw.

dita.jpgIn the world of vintage fashion, the degree of vintage runs the gamut from mixing old with new, to looking like you stepped out of a cheesecake magazine. Dita Von Teese, the adored burlesque performer/MAC covergirl/endorser of various lifestyle sundries can get away with the full on vintage retro look. It's her persona. Incidentally, she is the queen of mixing vintage and retro clothing. You would never know her suits or dresses weren't original 50s garments.

Fashionista.com brought up the point of how far can you take retro fashion before it becomes costumey? And should it matter?

In my early years of collection, obsessing and coveting vintage fashion, I always dressed to the nines when I went out-from head to toe, decades past were represented. In my defense, I was a bit creative about mixing decades. The true historians in my misfit circle of friends would bluntly point out that my 60s jewelry went quite well with my 50s dress and 40s hairstyle.

During the week, I would always incorporate some form of vintage-I still do. But I am not so worried about a head to toe vintage look in my 30s. It was fun to dress up and feel like a pin up girl in my 20s, but I don't know if it's age or boredom, I just don't feel the need to go all out with my wardrobe.

Many of my friends are in the same wardrobe frame of mind as well. We had a cocktail party right before Christmas, and one of our dear friends, who is a vintage/retro fashionista herself, looked amazing in her 60s style A line bob, 50s style leopard print glasses, a bubble skirt dress from Old Navy paired with leggings and mary janes. Modern, retro and totally on trend all in one.

So where do you draw the line?

Style Council at Lulu's Vintage

I completely admire and read Lulu's Vintage Blog on a daily basis.

Anne, the fashionable proprietress of the blog/store has such great taste which is evident in her blog choices and inventory. She interviewed herself for her Style Council column.

anneoflulu.jpg

"I like the feminine details of the Edwardian era, the beading and other decorative details of the 1920's, the bias cut sleek gowns of the 1930's, the cute rayon prints of the 1940's and the full skirted look of the 1950's."

Check out the rest of the interview and be sure to bookmark the site. It's a must read for vintage lovers.

I'm back

It's been pretty quiet around here. I was gone for two weeks on a family vacation in Mazatlan, Mexico. I know-tough life. However, it was much too cold for my jersey and cotton frocks and tees.

With no real great shopping around, I had to tough it out in a hoodie. But it was a cute hoodie-it was a Joie hoodie with a peplum. That kind of makes up for it right?
