Vintage Find - 60s Geoffrey Beene
Good vintage transcends time. It isn't defined by one decade and is completely relevant to modern fashion. As is the case with this 1960s Geoffrey Beene shift. The hey day of Geoffrey Beene was the 1960s. But if you look at this dress, can you tell it's from the 1960s? It looks fresh and new and now.

Funky, Punky Chic
Yesterday, i went to my stylist to get a desperate color correction on my newly highlighted hair. My hair is normally a deep violet, but very natural looking. it's the only funky color I can get away with in my day job.
We had a long discussion about how we feel too old to do punky colors. Of course, she was telling me this while sporting cotton candy pink hair. And it looks fabulous on her. In our circle of friends, we wouldn't bat an eyelash at such a daring, unnatural color. But something has happened to us subculture girls. We got corporate. At least I did. My stylist just feels that having arm loads of tattoos AND pink hair is a bit cliche. So she's going back to her platinum blond.
But when i see this girl on the Sartorialist, looking so so chic in her patent leather tote and 80s style power blazer, she makes me smile and think, I want bright blue hair now! She looks like she works somewhere stuffy right???

Manifique Courreges Space Age Fashion Show

Before Viktor and Rolf tortured their models by making them walk the runway pre-equipped with their own lighting (models need a union!), Courreges was outfitting women in completely unwearable, but utterly breathtaking designs that transformed the models into a walking sculpture.

YSL - the fusion between fashion and art
Yves Saint Laurent is undoubtedly one of the greatest French fashion designers of all time. The talent designer is best known for his Le Smoking suit. He is also one of the first to popularize Ready to Wear with his Rive Gauche line in 1966.
Unlike other French couturiers, Yves Saint Laurent took inspiration from the street for his couture collection. But he was equally influenced by art and paid homage to some of the greatest modern, cultural and classical artists of our times with literal fashion interpretations of their creations. His jersey dresses became canvass as he transformed evening wear into wearable art.
The chic ladies at Dos Mujeres y Un Vestido have written a fabulous blog post curating the works of Yves Saint Laurent alongside the original inspirations.

Vintage Find - Tough Pearls
It seems like everyone is dying to create the Sexy Secretary look by reproducing Working Girl and Tootsie looks. Was that really sexy though? Literal is rarely stylish.
Sex appeal is achieved when you add a bit of toughness to a bit of demure. These vintage pearls in beige and silver give a little bit of edge to a corporate look that lets everyone know you're the boss in the boardroom, and you're the boss in the bedroom too.

These events are right up there with runway shows in fantasy and flash.

LA Fashion Week - Whitley Kros does 70s and 80s style
I usually don't comment on fashion shows that I don't attend, because, well, that just makes no sense. But I was moved to comment on the Whitley Kros show because it seems to be the only show that had any value at LA Fashion Week.
Fashion Week Daily's review describes Marissa Ribisi and Sophia Coloma's collection as
embracing '70s and '80s style, from Working Girl hair to jumpsuits. Tweed and plaid fabrics mixed with faint animal prints and a color palette of red, salmon, burnt orange, black, and white, seen in oversized slouchy knits, blazers, and cigarette pants
Sounds very comfy and I'm all over the cigarette pants and blazers this season. Considering my petite height, I'd probably do a shrunken blazer over a slouchy one though.
But what caught my fashion-starry-eyed attention was the fact that André Leon Talley was in the audience. Seriously. At LA Fashion Week. I was stunned. Maybe it was the celebrity allure; Bijou Phillips, Juliette Lewis, Marissa's twin brother Giovanni Ribisi and her husband Beck were all in attendance.
This sounds like a show to catch. Note to self: get a press pass next season!

Vintage Find - Pink Crocodile Clutch
The Spring runway shows indicate dressing will be alive with color and bursting with florals. I can't imagine a better bag to go with both trends than this pink crocodile clutch. Even the skins are getting a dose of happy this season.

I (Anatomically Correct) Heart Paraphernalia
Along with art prints on dresses, I love bold, iconic jewelry. Paraphernalia makes the most fantastic plastic pendants using vintage images and creates them into wearable art. Hearts are cute, but this one is arresting. Be sure to check out their bow and portraits of famous folks.

Vintage Society on Style.com
One of my favorite vintage style mavens, Beth of The Vintage Society, was interviewed by Maya Singer for Style.com. Beth was chosen by OC brand Quicksilver as a candidate for their new mentorship and sponsorship program.
Quicksilver will be helping Beth realize her dreams in fashion and writing but providing her a work space and I imagine funding to work on her projects.
Congrats! Any time a vintage girl gets recognized by mainstream fashion a vintage angel gets a used set of stylish and wearable wings.

Vintage Find - Vintage Avante Garde Tulle Polka Dot Blouse
Last month, I blogged about a delightful little confection of a blouse by Comme des Garcons.
As I was trolling eBay, a moment of weakness in an otherwise tumultuous relationship, I was amazed to find the potential inspiration for the Garcons blouse.
Who knew polka dots could look so avant garde?
