Mix It Up - Vintage & New - Demure Jeweld Peacock
Wearing vintage clothing from head to toe can border on costumey. Why not embrace your favorite vintage pieces and incorporate them into everyday life? Mix it up!
Normally, I create the Vintage & Modern mixes using ThisNext, but I've been wanting to try Polyvore since they emailed me last year. Seeing a lot of bloggers' Polyvore sets, I decided to play dress up too. I love that you can move the images around.

It's like an ultra cool museum with wonderful eccentric dealers and collectors running around.

Summer Flats for Work
This summer will be the first one I have to work in over 7 years. I always try to maintain some level of professionalism, so flip flops are kind of out of the question - especially since I don't really like the feeling of a little stem of plastic or leather between my toes.
I created this little wish list of cute little flats that are not only work appropriate, but will keep my feet nice and dry.
Enjoy!

Levi's Jeans - Vintage or Reproduction?
Levi Strauss & Co. has found a lucrative niche in their 100-year-old clothing line -reproduction jeans.
Levi's® newest addition to their line is the 1966 646™ bell bottoms as seen on vintage maven Nicole Richie. Levi takes selvage, dead stock fabric and manufactures a whole line based on the original 1966 pattern. The new/old line of jeans retails for $78-$154 and comes in two colors.
However, a quick search on eBay reveals that original vintage Levi's® 646™ bell bottoms have sold for as little as $17.99 up to $170, with a few pairs being new-old stock.
As much as I love vintage clothing, sometimes I am in favor of reproductions because clothing from very early decades is impossible to find in good condition or in wearable sizes. But I am torn about the 1966 646™ bell bottom Levis, which truthfully are more of a flare than a bell bottom. Do you think it's better to buy them new or vintage?

Vintage Find - Chunky Hearts Bakelite Necklace
I was so thrilled when I saw models walking down the runway dripping with chunky, bold plastic accessories at shows like Yves Saint Laurent and Phillip Lim. I anticipate that chunky plastic jewelery will be as big a hit in 2008 as it was in the '20s and '30s.

Chunky, clunky and beautiful plastic necklaces and bangles are the accessories of choice for Art Deco lovers. We can thank Leo H. Baekeland for creating the wonder plastic that was used in everything from radios to billiard balls. After the Depression (or "Economic Slow Down") women who wanted to cheer up an outfit wore inexpensive, but beautiful Bakelite jewelry. And the pretty little plastic baubles caught on - even rich ladies wanted an arm full of colorful bangles.
Bakelite jewelry seems to only go up in price and you can still find it at thrift stores, which goes to show how resilient the plastic is. I just found a butterscotch swirled bangle with an embedded serpentine metal ring. Score!

The vintage find for this week is a gorgeous set of butterscotch and caramel Bakelite necklace and earrings. The tortoiseshell like hearts really take this necklace the realm of fashion versus collectible. And at only $200 for the set, it's a steal!

How To Go From a Pear Shape to and Hourglass
I've been in the market for a little black dress with sex and sizzle. I'm not quite the Audrey type - I'm more of a Jessica Rabbit meets Maria Felix girl. I like vavoom with class. But with a pear shape like mine, it's hard to find a black dress that meets all of my multiple shape needs.
But I think I have struck gold with this little darling by Stop Staring over at Unique-Vintage.com. She's got a low V-neck with elegant gathering to create a bit of illusion in the lacking bust area, flutter sleeves to draw attention up and make my shoulders appear a bit broader. Her waist is cinched and tiny. It's the one good part I've got - I'm flaunting it. Her hips are sleek because I definitely don't need illusion there, and her flirty pleats balance out the top. This unproportioned pear becomes and hour glass in an instant.

A Marimekko Mystery - Earrings ??
By now, everyone who loves the bold, graphic prints of Marimekko has heard of the amazing collection at H&M.
I also wanted to share with you the Marimekko concept store because colorful shapes and patterns shouldn't just be worn on your body! They carry a slew of punchy patterned lifestyle products from linens to art work.

But I am totally stumped on this pair of earrings I acquired. They are marked marimekko® DESIGN BY AURIFEX.

Are they vintage? They must be licensed and not truly Marimekko. I can't seem to find any information on them. Marimekko experts - help!

Vintage Find of the Week - Remix Corazon 1940s Style Sandals
As much as I love vintage, finding vintage shoes in good condition that aren't a quadruple A in width is a challenge. This is when my favorite vintage reproduction cobbler comes to the rescue - Re-mix shoes!
Re-mix shoes are excellent quality and even better than the real thing because the soles will last forever. These little green sandals with an adorable heart and crisscross straps are perfect for summer sundresses. The cuteness, quality and uniqueness factor are well worth the $98 for the Corazon sandals. I corazon cute shoes!

LA Times Vintage Shopping Guide & Finds
I am growing more and more fond of the LA Times Image section. The writers are not afraid to mix vintage and modern fashion. My two favorite staff writers are Emili Vesilind and Erin Weinger. They are my vintage soul sisters.
Emili wrote a piece last week where she shared online vintage shopping tips and a stellar photo essay of choice vintage goodies. She also shared her favorite online vintage stores. While Debutante Clothing was not listed (I forgive you Erin) some of my favorites were - Archive Vintage, Femminastyle Vintage, and Swank Vintage all received great reviews.
Emili's article shares some solid advice on shopping for vintage online. I shared very similar online vintage shopping tips in 2005. It's good to know we are all engaging in conversation that helps shoppers find treasures online.

More Vintage Hair Styles
A few months ago, a reader emailed and asked about tutorials for vintage hairstyles. I came across more great video tutorials collected by Miss Pumpkin.
The young woman doing the Rosie the Riveter style has the most amazing hair! I'm jealous at the massive amount of locks.
Which is your favorite look? Do you have a link to a great vintage hair tutorial? Share!

Vintage Clothing Mix - Florals and Gladiator Sandals
It's been a while since I've done a vintage mix, but I wanted to pull this feature out of the Movable Type closet.
This is my take on the floral dress and gladiator sandal look. I know - super trendy but this is one trend I am loving. A vintage dress with graphic tropical flowers get a bit of edge with some tough and sexy gladiator sandals.

Vintage Find of the Week - 1950s Ballerina Dress
Some may argue that fashion is not art. But when your skirt looks like an abstract painting depicting dainty ballerinas and graceful dancers, how can one think otherwise?
The 1950s brought about some of the most beautiful abstract prints of flowers, dancers and a number of other figures that make girls' hearts go zing. This full skirt vintage dress by Lilli Ann, available at Poshgirlvintage.com, could fit right in with the watercolor florals and illustrated prints found on the runways of New York and Milan this spring. Wear an original!

Varvatos has moved in to CBGB

Back in November, I blogged about the announcement that John Varvatos would be using the closed down CBGB location as his newest boutique. Well, he has moved in, and brought all of his devil's music accoutrements with him!

The store front was given to Varvatos completely empty, but the graffitied walls plastered with stickers and posters and the theatrical lighting on ceiling remain. Varvatos wanted to leave the history, the memories and the artifacts proving that rock and roll once lived in his new home. "Walking around the Varvatos space at 315 Bowery just confirmed for me that energy doesn't disappear, it only gets transformed, you can feel it - all over the place!" said Arturo Vega, the Ramones Creative Director, who has lived around the corner from the club since 1973.
Alongside his exquisite clothing-styles that even good old punk rock boys wouldn't turn their nose up at-are vintage leather jackets, jeans and rock T-shirts carefully picked by What Comes Around Goes Around.
Varvatos says, "As CBGB's was a unique arena for the music scene, this store will be the same for fashion and rock & roll. They have always been intertwined and here they will live together!"

Vintage from LA to NY
Wow. I don't post for a couple days and mainstream media, specifically newspapers, are all talking about vintage! Yippee. Someone's getting it.
The New York Times interviewed her vintage highness, Dita Von Teese. She spills on burlesque, her divorce and why she got in trouble with PETA!
Meanwhile, the LA Times reports that one of my favorite vintage enthusiasts, Liz Goldwyn, is curating a vintage collection of hats and sweater clips for Opening Ceremony. I bought Liz's book "Pretty Things". You can tell how much time and devotion she put into that book. Just looking at the pretty pink cover and embossed gold lettering makes me happy.
Also in the LA Times, a photo editorial on shoes! From the 1920s to the 1980s. Vintage Fashion Guild member, author and (my guess) a tad bit of a shoe fetishist, Jonathan Walford shares some of his prized treasures in this great visual timeline. Be sure to check out Jonathan's book, The Seductive Shoe: Four Centuries of Fashion Footwear.
The good thing is that more this could lead more fashionistas into the wonderful world of vintage, which is just good for eye candy. The bad thing is that more fashionistas will be wearing vintage, which means less for me.
Enjoy the links!
