Vintage 101 - How to Take Your Measurements

They say Marilyn Monroe was a size 12. Well, the 12 of the '50s is not the 12 of today. In fact, there is no standardized sizing system in place. I love going to the Gap or Old Navy and kidding myself that I am a size 6 when really I'm an 8.

When shopping online, especially for vintage clothing, it is very important to know your measurements before falling in love with a dress that won't fit. Here's a little video tutorial I created to help you figure out the dimensions of your curves!

Enjoy!

Thanks for the compliment Jennine. I've had this video recorded but was too nervous to put it up but after seeing your adorable video, I was inspired.

Thanks Girl-Woman!
It's always a good idea to know your measurements, especially when shopping online, even if it's modern clothing. That way you can compare your measurements to the sizing charts on the e-commerece site.

Love this video! So useful!
And I have that dress too! Lovely.
Grand Prix by Anna Sui for Anthropologie.
I actually bought it on eBay!

Pamela,
glad you enjoyed it.
I bought mine on ebay too!!!

Great article on measurements for vintage clothing. There is a big difference in how sizes were determined over the years and measurements are by far the best way to be sure. Especially when shopping online.

This video helps a lot, thank you!

As a young adult woman whose weight doesn't fluctuate very much, how often should I remeasure?

Sandra Author Profile Page:

Good question Jordan!
Personally, I don't bother remeasuring unless I notice my everyday clothing are starting to fit tighter or looser.

Jesselynneand:

Thank you so much for this helpful guide. By the way, you are very poised in front of the camera! I would have been so nervous. Classy presentation!
