Vintage Hairstyling - Participate and Win a Copy!
Tuesday, I posted a review of the new hairstyling book that all the vintage fashionistas are buzzing about - Vintage Hairstyling by Lauren Rennells. It is a gorgeous book that will help even the teasing comb challenged get an authentic vintage do.
And I have two special announcements:
If you would like to ask hair and makeup artist and author of Vintage Hairstyling a question, leave a comment and she'll be happy to answer it. Think of it - a free hair consultation!
And, one lucky winner will receive a brand-spankin new copy of the book (a $29.95) value. Here are the rules. Leave a comment and tell us your favorite hairstyle decade. The winner will be picked at random.
All comments need to be in by Sunday 5pm PST.
Good luck!

I have the ratting part down, but I never know how to get the tangles out when I am done. Should I just brush thru it, regardless of pain, or is there a better way.

What a great contest - I want Rita Hayworth hair just like the picture so I guess I am a 40's girl at heart!
Posted on July 23, 2008 08:05
Cool!
My favorite style is the short look that Elizabeth Taylor wore in Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, Marilyn rocked that look pretty well too.
Posted on July 23, 2008 08:57
Great- the new book looks really interesting. I love the 40's hairstyles but was never really able to accomplish the look when I had long hair. Of course, I also love the Audrey Hepburn hair with her little bangs and short cut.
Posted on July 23, 2008 09:27
The 70's! Gotta love that wild hair.
Posted on July 23, 2008 09:41
I just love the look of rows of finger waves~ 20's perhaps?
Absolutely impossible with naturally curly, wavy, obstinate hair~
Posted on July 23, 2008 10:00
My favorite decade is the 1930s. I love the elegance of pincurls and fingerwaves. I'm in love with Tallulah Bankead's photo in a 1931 Vanity Fair magazine I found. :)
My question is: I've been trying to reproduce a pincurl look with HotStix. Even with wrapping the ends and using a setting lotion--I can still never get the curls to lay into nice waves. It always seems to get into a bushy mess of tight curls that takes forever to start to relax. Do I need more setting lotion? Am I just not patient enough brushing it out? (I guess that is 2 questions!) Any advice would be very much appreciated! Thank you!

Hello, and thanks for this opportunity. My vote's for the sixties. Why?
Well, because everything, from long-straight-and parted in the middle, to curled updos, to bouffant flips were available.
Me like variety!
Posted on July 23, 2008 10:39
I'm a huge fan of 30's pincurls, too. They always look so elegant and yet so hard to do. I'd love to win this book and learn how to do them!
Posted on July 23, 2008 13:40
1940s for sure! So many soft looking pretty waves
Posted on July 23, 2008 16:03
I would love to get the standard rockabilly (non Betty) 40s style to my hair, with the big rolls at the top, pulled back with the back let down in fat curls.
I have tight corkscrew curl hair halfway down my back, mostly one length...why? Because I don't know what else to do with it! Short hair makes me look too butch. Eeek!

This is so great, I'm delighted to see a new book out on vintage hairstyles. Even if I don't get lucky and win, I will try to pick up this book as soon as possible.
My whine, er, question is this: What direction would you go if you were a woman that modeled vintage clothing of all eras. Is there a great basic vintage cut, or could there be such a thing? I figure the median year of what I sell is about 1962, and I sell items from Victorian to 80s. What is an adaptable cut in your estimation?
Posted on July 23, 2008 20:19
This is so great! My favorite hairstyle is the likes of Brigitte Bardot. What decade is that in anyway. I wasn't born by then hehe. :)
Posted on July 23, 2008 21:24
I am a big fan of the 1940s look, especially film noir! The styles are so feminine and sexy!
My question is: What is the best way to keep your hair healthy when regularly wearing vintage dos? (My hair is especially prone to heat damage and breakage.)
Posted on July 23, 2008 22:17
I love the style in the 40s or was it 50s? Those waves are great! I love it because my current natural hair would perfectly fit into that decade! :P

Posted on July 24, 2008 01:32
I like 1950's updos, though I can't say I've ever really done one well. My problem is that my hair is very straight, so it's hard for me to create the waves and volume I'd like to have. Is there anything I could do other than ratting it? I have enough length to try something interesting.
Posted on July 24, 2008 04:17
I'd love to have the Vintage Book of Hairstyles! What fun it would be to try some different looks. My favorite decade would also be the 1940's. All those beautiful waves. The Veronica Lake look was lovely. There were also upsweeps that were nice. I also love the rolls that were in some styles. I'd love to know how the rolled hairtstyles were done. Thanks!
Posted on July 24, 2008 11:42
I love 50s pageboys and Veronica Lake waves, but it's only cause I can't get the volume for a Brigitte Bardot sex kitten look.
Posted on July 24, 2008 12:24
of friend of mine has this book already and im dying to get a copy of it! its been so hard for me to find products, and just the right styling tools for my hairstyles and this book has it all!! hehe..
i love anything from the 1920s and up. from sleek and smooth, sexy and casual, to big and bold! i love it all!

Posted on July 24, 2008 19:04
For me, personally, I'm rather "hair" attached to the 80s.
Aquanet hairspray, tons of gel, short spiky hair; I loved it all!
One of my daughters that grew up in the 80s hates the pictures of her, just because of how I did her hair lol. I always teased her bangs and sprayed them into place haha.......I thought it looked cute and it was the 80s after all.
Great giveaway!

1980's hair, definately!
Posted on July 26, 2008 12:47
If you have a beautiful face your hair style will look great. It won't matter what style you choose. If you are a bow-wow face a nice hair style won't help much. If you have a beautiful face and a beautiful body no one is looking at your hair anyway unless it's shockingly different.
