Reason #1 Why You Should Buy All Possible Domain Names
I was checking out Start Up Nation's Home-Based 100 Competition and they have 2 new categories: Best Slacker and Most Glamourous. Of course I headed for the most glamourous and fully expected someone with a vintage clothing busines, but I didn't expect one called Debutante Vintage!
My online boutique is called Debutante Clothing. I started it in 2005, so I have been branding it longer. But hindsight is 20/20 and the smart thing to have done in 2005 is to register both domains. Lesson learned.
Learn from my mistake! Go out and register all possible domains for your site.

Also, I have been told to even trademark the name of your site not just buy multiple domain names.

Yes, and now you have the issue of how do you let people know that debutantevintage.com is not you, and has no affiliation with Debutante Clothing? Her site has a completely different look and feel from yours. I've run into this problem with discussion board and social network sites, where a random user has chosen the name coutureallure. Suddenly it appears that I'm a leather wearing rocker chick (far from it), or someone contemplating gastric bypass surgery (uh, no...)

Tink,
I never thought about trademarking. Good idea.

This is an issue Couture. How do I go about doing this.
While I can totally picture you as a leather clad vixen ; P being confused for someone else after years of branding is a pain in the rear.

In my case, I should have purchased Debutante Vintage as well, since I sell and blog about vintage. At the beginning, I didn't want to choose such an obvious name - in hindsight, even if I didn't want the obvious name (which is contrary to good marketing practices ::rolling eyes::) I should have purchased it anyway.
