Vintage Find - 1950s Dior Swing Coat

vintage dior swing opera coat

In 1947, a French couturier named Christian Dior created fashion history with his "New Look". It was a far cry from the slender, long skirts of the time. The tiny waists and voluminous skirts caught the attention of every fashion critic and well heeled woman across the globe. But such cutting edge fashion did not come without a price. The "excessive amount of fabric" caused quite a stir in a time war recovery.

Dior has always been a fashion forward line. From couture to ready to wear, Dior designs pushed the fashion envelope. Take this swingy clutch coat. Because of its shortened sleeves and silhouette, I immediately thought it was a 1960s coat. However, this coat could very well be from 1954-55 when you look at this Spring 1953 coat. Dior was truly ahead of his time. Always.
