Debutante Clothing :: The DebLog
Vintage Find - Chic Raffia Purse
Yesterday, my husband and I met up with some friends at the Tiki Invasion event in Montclair, CA. The Tiki Invasion was an all day event at one of the only remaining drive-in in California, featuring bands, vendors, burlesque dancers, and vintage B movies when the sun went down.
I was able to dip into the Debutante Clothing closet and wore a wrap batik print skirt which was perfect for the warm weather and lawn chair sitting! Because I don't like looking too costumey, I opted for a modern bag. But I was really envious of all of the great summery woven bags the girls were carrying. So I went on an internet quest for a cute raffia bag that wasn't too novelty and was pretty enough to wear to wear with non vintage clothing.
I present the perfect raffia bag for summer:

Summer Flats for Work
This summer will be the first one I have to work in over 7 years. I always try to maintain some level of professionalism, so flip flops are kind of out of the question - especially since I don't really like the feeling of a little stem of plastic or leather between my toes.
I created this little wish list of cute little flats that are not only work appropriate, but will keep my feet nice and dry.
Enjoy!

How To Go From a Pear Shape to and Hourglass
I've been in the market for a little black dress with sex and sizzle. I'm not quite the Audrey type - I'm more of a Jessica Rabbit meets Maria Felix girl. I like vavoom with class. But with a pear shape like mine, it's hard to find a black dress that meets all of my multiple shape needs.
But I think I have struck gold with this little darling by Stop Staring over at Unique-Vintage.com. She's got a low V-neck with elegant gathering to create a bit of illusion in the lacking bust area, flutter sleeves to draw attention up and make my shoulders appear a bit broader. Her waist is cinched and tiny. It's the one good part I've got - I'm flaunting it. Her hips are sleek because I definitely don't need illusion there, and her flirty pleats balance out the top. This unproportioned pear becomes and hour glass in an instant.

Vintage Find - 60s Geoffrey Beene
Good vintage transcends time. It isn't defined by one decade and is completely relevant to modern fashion. As is the case with this 1960s Geoffrey Beene shift. The hey day of Geoffrey Beene was the 1960s. But if you look at this dress, can you tell it's from the 1960s? It looks fresh and new and now.

I (Anatomically Correct) Heart Paraphernalia
Along with art prints on dresses, I love bold, iconic jewelry. Paraphernalia makes the most fantastic plastic pendants using vintage images and creates them into wearable art. Hearts are cute, but this one is arresting. Be sure to check out their bow and portraits of famous folks.

Vintage Find - Chiffon and Chaotic Ruffles
My favorite styling trick is mixing edgy and soft. This 1960s chiffon overlay cocktail dress embodies that perfectly. The lingerie like simplicity of sheer black chiffon is met by a chaotic mess of ruffles.
I love it when vintage looks like it just stepped off a current runway.

Vintage Snakeskin Handbags
Oh how I love the crocs and the snakes. But I could kick myself for completely forgetting to bid on these two beauties:

The plum clutch is a much more affordable one than the Fendi and just as beautiful. The oyster one is so unique and the absence of color makes it just as beautiful as gem toned bags.

But I really am I love with all the punchy colored bags. A great way to make an otherwise boring outfit pop with sophistication. So unexpected and slightly edgy without being trashy.
Vintage Skins offers the most beautiful examples of exotic skin handbags and accessories on the web. The site is such a valuable resource and virtual eye candy for the vintage bagista.

I finally settled on this vintage bone snakeskin tote. And according to Vintage Skins, I got a killer deal.

Punky Cocktail Dress by L.A.M.B.
Ah, the box pleats, the shelf bust, it's all so wonderful. Gwen is really becoming a fantastic designer. The only thing i don't like about this dress is the low scoop back. I see it mimics the rounded hemline in front, while the back hemline has the same pleats as the bust. While it is clever, I think a higher scoop would make it less risque and keep it looking sophisticated with attitude.

Vintage Norma Kamali
check out my latest eBay acquisition
They have a little 2 inch heel. I think I will be wearing these with skirts and some kind of textured tights. Or with short pants.

Wide Leg Pants - The Anti Skinny
I really wish I could pull off skinny pants. But when you are cury, skinny pants exggerate your otherwise beautiful curves. I say, buck the trend, and go with a more glamorous, and much more curvy friendly shape-the wide leg trouser.
Nanette Lepore, Cynthia Steffe and Zac Posen are all doing them in fabulous vintage style. But we found a pair of wide leg pants that have a very flattering rise-they sit at the waist, and much more affordable.

The Battle for Vintage Gucci
Ever since I got back from Italy, I have had this incessant need for a vintage Gucci bag. It's sick, really. But not just any bag. It had to be the gold GG medallion original Blondie bag. I saw one on eBay and I was so hooked. I had no idea how difficult it would be to actually get one though.
My first attempt was a black leather one. I watched. I waited. I forgot. I completely and utterly forgot to bid on time. This just made me want it more.
My second, third and fourth attempts, I was outbid. I hate you pollyannarose! But like a good vintage huntress, I did not give up on my game. At last, I am the proud owner of a navy blue 1969-70 vintage Gucci shoulderbag.
In the fight between good vintage girl and vintage girl, there is a rightful winner. Yes, me. It's been a long battle on eBay, but I am triumphant.
