Thrifting Words to Live By – Search High and Low – A Tale of Prada

I have been thrifting less and less lately. What used to be a weekly activity has now dwindled to once a month. With so many sellers swarming to Ebay, styling aspiring models, and creating magazine like layouts, the thrift stores are pretty picked over. I’ll be happy when many of these new sellers realize how much work it is, get bored, and move on.

But I had an amazing thrifting experience last week that may suck the bitterness right out of me. There I was at my favorite thrift – I’m not revealing so don’t even ask ; ) – hoping to find a couple of worthy items. Things were looking pretty grim, especially after I spotted a fashionista strutting down the aisle sporting skin tight jeans, gorgeous riding boots, a cashmere sweater, and a cute little bob. I thought she was competition and I quickly felt the adrenaline rush, until I noticed a run of the mill sweater and plenty of jeans in her cart. But still, they could’ve been some great jeans!

With my competitive side fully engaged, I was determined to find a prize. I decided to search a section I rarely search – skirts. And there it was! The prize.

As soon as I touched it I knew it was quality. The softness of the wool, the bright cheery color. The real leather piping, and the silk lining. I look inside. PRADA!

And 50% off!

Even though it is not vintage, it has a definite vintage look. The box pleat gives way to a side slit. I’m a little torn because it is wool so technically it could be a fall piece, but the sun-shiny color screams spring. Maybe this would be good for a windy day with some boots.

Lesson learned: even with fashionistas trolling your turf, pickings looking slim, never forget to search high and low if it is treasure you seek.

what a great find!!
i was afraid that all the thrifts here in philly would be picked over, what w all the scenester girls here. but i walk away from my fav thrift every week w a giant bag of goodness. i even found an emma domb dress last month!
the secret is not to shop in the hip areas, but to venture to crappy parts of town. the best thrifts are in the worst neighborhoods. especially true here where the cool kids don’t drive cars. never give up! even when i see fashionable girls in ‘my’ thrift i know that their style is way different from mine and even if they find good stuff, it prolly won’t be the stuff i want.

sweet! that’s so awesome!! every once in awhile you have those days where you’ll find some amazing things, and then you think, “aw, i should be doing this all the time!” and then you get back into it, and then you get disappointed, and then you stop going, and then the cycle keeps on… sigh!~ my life!!

What an amazing find! The skirt is gorgeous.
I found a Valentino skirt at a Salvation Army once for $2! The quality of the wool and the finish of the skirt was impeccable. But it was not as gorgeous as your Prada one!

What a great find! And such a pretty color – I have been searching for a bag of that exact shade for what seems like ages.

I know! Isn’t it a great skirt. AND it’s Prada! I was thrilled.
Sunshine – I go to the sketchy parts of town as well. One thrift has caught on though and has upped their prices. Damn them.
Violetville – it’s all about they cycle. The Cycle of Vintage LOL.
Amanda – score on the Valentino!
CafeFashionista – it IS a gorgeous color. My camera caught the color pretty accurately. It’s perfect for all seasons. I have a little sling purse the exact same color in my inventory if you are interested?!

Score! A few months ago I was in an overpriced Goodwill, and found a mint condition Furla handbag for… 7.99! Unfortunately it turned out to be too small for my needs, so I brought it to my fav consignment shop who promptly scooped it up and priced it at $79! When it sells I get 40% of that, which of course will wind up getting spent back in the thrifts. The thrift circle continues… With that said, most thrift shops have gotten out of control with their pricing and you can actually find better quality and designer goods at the consignment shops. The other day I was at a Salvation Army that had a faux fur that was under 10 years old, dirty, torn, awful condition from some chain store like the Gap. Price? $249! At the consignment shop this winter they had full length mink coats in pristine condition and authentic Chanel jackets for $300. OTOH, I was able to score a gorgeous patchwork mink with leather insets from the ’70’s that fits as if it was custom-made for me (a miracle in and of itself as I am so petite) for $34.95, go figure!

It resold for $79?! Wow! I need to keep an eye out for mid-line modern stuff. It’s a circle I love and can’t seem to break. I love when I can find items that feel as if they were made for me. Score for you too!

You’ll take me there next time I’m in town, right?! (j/k!) Great find. I love the adrenaline rush of a score, there’s nothing quite like it!

Thrifting has been unfruitful and boring as of late (too many looking to stock stores on ebay), but this makes me want to go hunting again. =)

Omg great find! I really need to get back to going to vintage and used clothing stores, I haven’t been in so long and I miss the thrill of the hunt!

I’m pretty sure it’s fake, sorry to tell you. :( Have you ever seen a real Prada label? They look nothing like this.
